How to Get Information Out of a Client For Website Design

Tired of waiting for clients to send you the information you need to complete their website on time and on budget? Not only is it frustrating for a website designer to wait on a client who is too busy to send the info, it costs us time and money. So if you're wondering how to get information out of a client for website design, here is a checklist that will help save your sanity!

Prepare Your Website Design Documents: Before you start accepting clients there are a number of documents you need to put in place to ensure your clients understand your services. Some documents you may want to have include a contract, a non-disclosure agreement, policies and a welcome letter. Having everything in place basically means you can explain to potential clients exactly what you need and what they can expect from the website design process. This way they will be prepared to send you the information and know what you will be asking for at what point (this should be all spelled out before payment is accepted or work begins).

Interview Potential Clients: Some people just may not be ready to have you design their website for them. Make sure you interview your potential clients every single time. You will get an initial gut reaction as to whether this is something who you can work with. Always go with your gut! Figure out what you are looking for in an ideal client and do not falter on that ideal. The interview is just as much for you to decide if you want to work with them as it is for them to decide if they want to work with you.

Communication is Key: Keep very clear communication about your expectations and needs from your clients. I use a project management program called Basecamp so that every design project is wonderfully organized. Assign your website design clients to deliver you the information you need (such as hosting and domain accounts) BEFORE you need it. Assume it will take them longer than expected and you can plan for any delays by working on other parts of the project, etc.

Do It For Them: Are you assigning some tasks to your clients that you could possibly do for them or with them? For example, if your client does not have hosting you could sign them up or walk them through it so you get the info as soon as you need it instead of waiting for them to figure it out and get it done.

Many of the issues between client and website design come down to lack of time and lack of communication. Make sure you plan for this and you should have a much smoother working relationship and get everything you need to do a fantastic job in a realistic amount of time. Now if you are looking for a way to put up a quality website more quickly that clients love to use, I suggest you check out WordPress. It's the program I use for all my websites.
